Refurbishment of Águas do Porto HQ, Oporto 2014
The main intention is to upgrade the degraded existing building in order to work as a new working space while minimising its dependency on mechanical systems, hence resulting on a passive building. For such purpose, two main architectural intentions were explored through the refurbishment of the existing building. In first place, the highlighting of the original building as a way to preserve its identity. Secondly, the connection of the site with its context, understanding context not only as the existing surroundings, but also with its climate and the influence of the city of Porto. The result is a building in which occupants and architecture adapt to the context and climate, allowing for a working space with natural light and ventilation, passive heating, and minimisation of heat losses by the construction system proposed.
